United Way of Mid & South Jefferson County, in collaboration with IRS and AARP, has coordinated an effort to provide tax preparation and assistance with filing tax credits to eligible residents in Jefferson County. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is targeted to low-to-moderate income workers who qualify to receive the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which refunds up to $4,400 depending on family size and income.
The tax site was open every Monday from February 1st through April 15th at the Port Arthur Public Library. Our impact to the community has shown an increase of 129% in tax returns being prepared and an increase of 182% of EITC funds being put back into taxpayer's pocket.
